The Fight That Changed Striking History

It only took one human sacrifice.

Here's the comment section...

Humans like to talk about things.

  • Thats the thing with martial art Sports, there are rules. I am a Muay Thai respecter though I train elements of ANY martial art (MMA) if it fits well into my smaller arsenal of fighting moves/techniques. Technically the Yank would have won that fight as he dropped the thai fighter twice! But rules for rest and rounds etc allow them to come back, he won from real toughness and them destroying kicks. In the street, Muay thai may not really have its place against other fighting styles, where as boxing really is a diamond style. Add the kicks in you have the common kick-boxing, taewkondo etc etc. In fast street fights they really do well and excel as much as I don’t like them
    .

  • Extraordinary. Two strong fighters. Bravery +
Simple strong technique by Thai vs flashy technique by USA
Ability to take the punishment proving the winning edge for the Thai.
I wonder how this would go down on the street? The Thai went down first and probably that would have been the decider BUT maybe he wouldn’t be first down had he been allowed to use his full repertoire of clinching and throws.
He lost this one but I wish I could move like Rick Roufus

  • Holy Crap. That was freakin awesome. In a fight where the rules were slanted toward the American fighter, the Thai fighter absolutely destroyed. In the end, everyone talked about this rule and that rule. Whatever. What works in the street is golden. Roufus should thank his stars elbows, plums, knees and the sweeps weren’t allowed.

  • There was clear bias in favor of Roufus, the ref did everything he could to cater to him. Soooo many point deductions. Scolded him like a child. The Thai fighter killed those legs though and surely seemed outmatched in the first round. It was a powerful 1 trick display that stole not only Roufus’s confidence but that of his supporters as they were obviously pained at the thought of having to accept the obvious results. Kicks that hurt the heart and soul, not to mention those damn legs.

  • Brutal efficiency and goes to show how ignorant people were back then about other martial arts. And then it would be a number of years until grappling would be integrated into the advent of MMA. Very cool video.
