Last week I sent out an email which declared the efficacy of Judo in real fighting.
I shared this clip right here, as a wondrous example of a Seoi Nage throw, used vs a machete attack.
Sadly... this clip turns out to have been a pre-scripted training exercise... it was a real throw, merely done in a fake situation.
The flawless timing did seem to be too good to be true...
I should have known!
(Of course, this clip and this clip using the 'same' throw were very much real).
As you know, at Fight Smart, we focus on REAL techniques... and only real techniques.
I've dedicated a good bit of my life to dispelling the BS in the martial arts world, and my philosophy remains the same:
If it works in the cage, it will work in the street.
Of course... some techniques need to be modified to protect our eyeballs and nuts, but I file that under 'common sense'.
Like a greedy squirrel, protecting our nuts should be a natural instinct.
At the end of the day... if a technique is working against a skilled professional fighter, it will work anywhere.
SO...
I went ahead and dug up a study of the best Judoka (Judo fighter) in the history of MMA... Karo Parisyan.
After all, we don't need to learn the entire art of Judo... just the MOST FUNCTIONAL STUFF.
So, if we isolate the specific techniques that he was able to execute in the cage, against real fighters, (without any clothing to grab), then we can create a small, yet reliable stash of Judo moves that we will work in any setting.
Click here to check out that video... it's very interesting stuff.
Now, keep in mind that traditional Judo is heavily based on GRIPS... and grabbing fistfuls of your opponent's "Kimono".
While you may not wear a Kimono, if you're fighting someone with a leather jacket, or even a thick t-shirt, you can use that fabric to control his body, and toss him like a rag doll.
Again, in MMA, those grips don't exist.
That highlight reel will work regardless of what your opponent is wearing.
If you need to toss somebody on the beach, or if some douche has crashed your pool party... that's the stuff that I would be employing.
If you want to learn about the 758,385 ways that you can use your opponent's clothing against him, look up a Judo (or Jiu Jitsu) school near you.
Train hard my friend... and have a fantastic weekend.
