How to Fight a Larger Opponent

Step 3. Finishing the Fight While Minimizing RISK

  • And this is why I hate BJJ they teach also to the way bigger and stronger guys which render my BJJ useless, so I had to result to taking him down then kicking him on the pavement(I prefer the days when they didn’t know BJJ so I wouldn’t have to result to striking (J~-~)J..)

  • Hi, Trav. Thanks for making video. I do agree with it. I will mention that I’ve had ongoing trouble playing the video. I’ve tried a few times this week. The video is glitching, slowly loading in chunks and sometimes repeating. Anyway, during your video you climbed onto Shovelhead in full mount while he was on his back. That posture did concern me because if the person had presence of mind, he could reach up and bear hug the waist, ankle trap and flip you to your back. You did mention playing the percentage of that the person making a foolish response. If they don’t, then you will find yourself on your back with the larger opponent between your guard. So, caution has to be exercised in how you pass and take top control. Unless you see a path to their back, a ground-and-pound from side control might be preferable. Thoughts?

  • Just letting you know that this stuff you are doing is great. I’m not even a fighter as I’m too old but I still like to see how stuff is done. Helps a great deal that you inject just the right humour in there too. Belly laughs.

  • Love it man, the Jiu Jitsu stuff is …well known! I’ve been training Jiu Jitsu ala Rickson (studying his fights / recently training via his new online academy and at my local gym) but have been wanting to up my standing/striking game. Your head movement program combined with Gracie Jiu Jitsu has really upped my game. Cheers man

  • Great stuff. I got in a fight with a bigger guy a couple of years ago — i’m 6′, 170 pounds; he looked about 6′ 2″/200. I took a couple of hits getting in close, but once inside, i simply tied him up and took him down. Then, while he was exhausting himself trying to get free, i just relaxed until he realized that he had lost the fight (he was the son of a friend’s friend, so i didn’t want to beat the crap out of him). Didn’t realize i was using a standard approach to fighting big guys, but it definitely worked AND it increased my confidence like 110%!

    Great work. Thanks again.
